(Black-legged) Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla

The Black-legged Kittiwake, called just Kittiwake in Europe, is a gull with widespread distribution along coasts of much of the north Atlantic and north Pacific oceans. Its call is said to sound like "Kittee-wayke".

Kittiwakes nest on high cliffs inaccessible to most potential predators. Their short legs are usually black but can be grey and even, rarely, pink. Thanks to Keith Wood for the photos above centre and right of a Kittiwake colony off Newfoundland, Canada, and a Kittiwake chick.
