The Black-necked Grebe is native to parts of temperate Europe, Asia and southern Africa.
Also to North America where it is known as the Eared Grebe.
It looks similar to the slightly smaller Little Grebe but with a black neck, bright red eyes and, in the
breeding season, gold tufts behind the eyes (leading to the "Eared" name). The russet plumage and black neck turns to grey in winter.
The underside is white. Like other grebes, the legs are set far back on the body for swimming and diving but
walking on land is difficult.
The chick is striped grey and white with a striped bill. Chicks will ride on the parents' backs for protection.
