Spectacled Eider Duck Somateria fischeri

The Spectacled Eider is a sea duck from the Bering Straits (Siberia and Alaska). The drake is basically a large black and white seabird with a green face mask, green "hair" and large "spectacles".

Around the coasts they dive for molluscs and crustaceans.

The female is similar to the female Common Eider, a large brown striped duck with slopping face, but she also has large, pale brown "spectacles" and a different bill.

The male eclipse plumage (in transition between breeding plumage and non-breeding female-like brown).
