The King Eider is a sea duck found along the coast throughout the Arctic Ocean. Breeding on arctic shores, it moves slightly south of the arctic circle in winter.

Eider Down female
Eider down. Bizarrely, their scientific name is S. spectabilis, which one might expect to refer to the Spectacled Eider (S. fischeri). The strange face shield could look like spectacles.

Unfortunately, I don't yet have a photo of the male in full breeding plumage, with bright yellow face shield, red bill, green face, soft grey head and delicate pink chest. These are in transition.

The female is similar to the female Common Eider, a large brown striped duck, but she has a less-sloping face and a different bill.
