The Santa Cruz Ground Dove is native only to lowland forests of the southern Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
The male has rich red-purple wings, a grey head, maroon body and white breast.
The female (not shown) has totally different plumage - she has a tan head and chest with olive green body and wings.
The species is critically endangered by habitat loss and poaching. A volcanic eruption in 2017 (Tinakula)
killed a large number of the remaining doves. Later just over 100 were confiscated from poachers and brought back to health
by Singapore's Mandai Wildlife who retained 60 and have continued to breed the species, by 2023 holding nearly half the
remaining global population.
