The Couas are members of the cuckoo family, native to Madagascar with different species using different habitats.
They are not brood parasites; they build nests and raise their young. The Giant Coua, the largest species, has a pheasant-type niche:
a ground-dwelling bird like the ground cuckoos of Southeast Asia, living in dry forests but nesting in trees.
Like all couas, the Giant Coua has bare, blue skin around its eye. It also has a small pinkish patch below/behind the eye and a pinkish breast.
Male and female have similar plumage.
