The Pope Cardinal is also called the Red-cowled Cardinal. Despite its scientific name, it is native to north-eastern Brazil.
It has a bright cardinal red head and throat, white front and dark grey and black back/wings.
Its relative the Red-crested Cardinal is similar but has a plainer back, lighter red head and high pointed crest.
The Yellow-billed Cardinal has plain blackish wings/back, a black throat and yellow bill.
Male and female have similar plumage.
Juveniles have brown heads.
It is not related to the Northern Cardinal of North America but is a Tanager, as indicated by its white lower bill.
