The colourful Paradise Tanager, despite its scientific name, is native to most of
northern South America but its range does not reach northern Chile. The bird has a light green face and crown, a bright turquoise front,
a midnight blue bib and, depending on subspecies, either a scarlet lower back or, as shown, gold and orange/red.
Unusually for birds and for many Tanagers, male and female both have similar, brightly-coloured plumage.
Juveniles are dull grey muted versions of the adults.
They have developed a clever way to find prey by following swarms of destructive army ants
which panic other insects to seek refuge up tree truncks where they fall prey to the tanagers.
