The White-winged Redstart, also known as Guldenstadt's Redstart, lives at high altitude
in mountains of southwest and Central Asia.
Shown is the male with black face and white crown. That shown is the Central Asian subspecies,
P. e. grandis -- photos taken by Alexandra Makhnina in Kazakhstan.
The nominal subspecies P. e. erythrogastrus breeds mainly in the Caucasus.
The red "start", an old English word for tail.
