Amazilia Hummingbird Amazilia amazilia

The Amazilia Hummingbird (also called Amazilia Emerald Hummingbird) is native to Peru and Ecuador. It is the smallest bird in the Amazon area.

Like most hummingbirds, it can fly forwards and backwards and can hover while taking nectar with wing beats of 70-80 per second.

The Amazilia has a chestnut belly (with more white than the related Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird of Colombia), a long, thin red bill with black tip and an iridescent green head and neck.

Male and female have similar plumage. Apart from mating, they have little to do with each other, have no pair bond and the female builds the nest and raises the chicks alone.
