After he built 2-3 nests, she chose one and is gathering soft nesting material to line it. (The male wren builds 2 or more round nests with grass, mud,
string, hair and the hen choses one to line with soft moss, fur, her own down - rather like he building the house and she choosing the curtains,
carpets and furniture. He will sometimes attract a second mate to one of the rejected nests.)
She likes cotton wool for nest lining (as do other small birds).
She also likes disguises such as this false moustache
and this Father Christmas beard.
She took a lot of lining material into such a small nest.
Photo of nest on right taken at distance while owners were out.
Nest was constructed inside a roosting dome in bushes (entrance made smaller by wren).
This was in a hanging basket and intended for Bluetits. . .
. . . but she climbed up to it.
She also took some moss.
Then the nest was ready for eggs to be laid.
