Feral Pigeons have developed a variety of plumage colours and patterns. The basic ancestral Rock Dove plumage (above left) has a light grey body
with two black wing bars, a darker head and iridescent green and purple at the neck (more in breeding males, including the chest).
Most feral birds' plumage is based on this. Some wild pigeons are completely white (above right).
Variations include pied, white with black speckled,
brown,
different patterns of pied,
including with partial black wing bars,
melanistic (black),
lightly chequered,
darkly chequered,
nearly white,
light grey with brown,
dark grey with brown,
and brown with grey, among others.
There was a constant, discrete group of these brown pigeons with white rumps and I
was asked if they were a separate (sub)species!
Thanks to nabojsa for the above photo of an unusual combination of warm red and cold blue colours.
