Black Grouse Tetrao tetrix

Black Grouse male
Black Grouse male
The Black Grouse is native to much of northern Eurasia. The male is largely black with an iridescent dark blue neck and back, a red wattle eyebrow and a lyre-shaped tail. The tail is raised, turkey-style, in courtship to display a white underside. As usual with grouse and pheasants, the female is camouflaged in brown-grey plumage as she takes sole care of young.
