The Desertas Giant Wolf Spider is endemic to one remote valley on the Madeiran island of Deserta Grande.
The female has a leg span of some 12cm, one of the largest wolf spiders.
It can give a painful and venomous bite to humans. It is critically endangered, with less than 5000 adults,
due to invasive grasses and invasive mammals eating native plants in its limited habitat. A conservation project is underway.
