There are three species of Cellar Spider in the UK but 2 are rare and only 1 is common.
The (Common) Cellar Spider, also called Daddy Longlegs but the latter is also a name for a crane fly
and even harvestmen, is a common web-building spider in outhouses, cellars and even homes. It is
a long-bodied spider with very long, thin legs.
Cellar spider with prey.
Prey is well-wrapped in webbing.
Well-fed. This prey, wrapped in webbing, is another spider.
Head and body length of females is 8mm but legspan can be 7cm. They are known to
prey on other spiders, even their own kind, as well as insects and woodlice. While that can be beneficial,
their extensive mesh of webs is not.
