Freshwater Crocodile
The Freshwater Crocodile lives in rivers and swamps of Northern Australia (from Western Australia to Queensland). It is much smaller than Australia's Saltwater Crocodile, males growing to some 3 metres (over 9 ft) long, and has a slender snout. It is not aggressive to humans unless threatened. It is also tolerant of brakish water. The one shown above left has lost part of its long tail. Previously fairly common, its population has suffered substantial decline through being poisoned by eating the toxic introduced Cane Toad. (Curiously, its Saltwater relative is not poisoned by eating them.)
