The Broad-snouted Caiman is native to marshes, swamps and mangroves of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia.
The largest males can reach some 3 metres (10 feet) in length, but typically they may be some 2 metres.
The powerful broad snout allows it to crush crustacean and small turtle shells. Social animals, they
communicate vocally with grunts and hisses.
