One of four subspecies, it looks similar to the nominal Mexican Cantil in black and white but has lemon, gold and/or brown in its white bands. Cantil is an ancient native word for white-lipped. It can grow to nearly a metre long and is highly venomous. Juveniles are brown with a greenish-yellow tail end which they use to attract prey.
