The Meadow Viper, also called Meadow Adder inhabits grasslands from south-eastern France through Central and Eastern Europe, Asia Minor and Central Asia through to China. A small viper, it is also called the Field Viper/Adder. On the steppes and deserts of Central Asia and China it is called the Steppe Viper or Adder.

The Latin name "ursini" isn't a reference to bears but to Italian naturalist Orsini.
