Smooth Snake Coronella austriaca

The Smooth Snake is a non-venomous snake native to much of temperate Europe and western Asia. In the UK, where it is one of three native snakes, its habitat is sandy heathland.

Typical adult length is 60-75cm (24-30 inches). Background colour can be grey, brown or rufous with faint or medium dark barring along the body to the tail.

Prey is mainly other, smaller reptiles. The young hatch from eggs internally and are born as small snakes.
