Four-lined Snake Elaphe quatuorlineata

The Four-lined Snake is native to Italy and eastern Mediterranean Europe. It is one of Europe's largest, reaching over 2 metres. It is a rat snake: not venomous but coiling and suffocating its prey of small rodents and birds. It is diurnal, mainly terrestrial but can climb well and hibernates in the coldest months.
