The Amethystine Python has an attractive mauve irridescence to its skin giving it the name. It is native to Papua New Guinea
and parts of Indonesia and northeastern Australia.
The sixth largest snake in the world, it is Australia's longest snake and can grow to over 17 feet (5.5 metres).
Exceptional records indicate individuals (females) of 23-27 feet (7-8 metres).
Diet is mainly small mammals but can include wallabies. Prey is held by sharp teeth and constricted (suffocated).
