Death adders, native to Australasia, are among the most venomous snakes in the world but are
not in the "adder/viper" family. The Common Death Adder is native to eastern Australia and Papua New Guinea. It grows
up to a metre long and has a banded body with diagonal head markings. It's method of hunting is to lie hidden in wait for passing
prey, often attracted by the lure of the snake's wiggling, white tail end. It is threatened by habitat loss and by invasive cane
toads (which eat its young and poison predatory adults).
