The Lesser Siren is a two-legged (front legs), fully aquatic salamander native to water bodies of eastern USA
and northeastern Mexico. They are neotenic - retaining larval features such as external, protruding gills throughout adulthood.
The Lesser Siren reaches some 17-70cm long (7-27 inches) compared to the Greater Siren at 18-97cm; unusually for salamanders,
males are larger than females. It is sometimes called a two-legged eel or dwarf siren, both incorrectly since it is not an eel
and the Dwarf Sirens are two species in a separate genus of Pseudobranchus.
