The Fire Salamander is native to forests of continental western, central and southern Europe. Depending on the subspecies, it can be almost entirely black or can have yellow spots/patches, broken lines or continuous lines of yellow on black. The yellow can also be orange or mixed with red. Shown is the Barred Fire Salamander, S. s terrestris. All subspecies are toxic to handle.
