Have I got newts for you!
The Sardinian Brook Salamander, also called the Sardinian Mountain Newt, is native to high altitude streams and waterways
on the mountains of east Sardinia, Italy.
Similar to the Corsican Brook Salamander, it is larger, has a flatter head (platycephalus)
and more spotted throat. They are mainly aquatic but hibernate and aestivate on land.
The courtship ritual includes arm waving and the male picking up the female in his mouth and carrying her to a mating location in water.
The Sardinian Brook Salamander is endangered through loss of habitat, disturbance by tourism, water pollution and drought.
