The Palmate Newt is native to temperate western Europe (not far north/far south). It is the smallest newt in the UK; females can grow to nearly 10cm long and males 5-8cm (including tail). It can be distinguished from the Smooth Newt by having no spots on its throat and the males in the breeding season having dark webbing on their hind feet that gives the species its name.
