The Anatolian Crested Newt is endemic to northern Turkey. The species was split from the Balkan Crested
only in 2016, both previously aggregated with the Southern Crested Newt and all three indistinguishable by visual characteristics.
Hybrids with the Balkan also exist where ranges meet.
They can reach 10-13cm long. Like the Great/Northern Crested, in the breeding season the male develops a tall,
jagged crest along the back and another, more wavy, on the tail which also has a white lateral streak. The female does not develop a crest.
(The Anatolian Spotted Newt (Neurergus strauchii) is a different genus.)
