Andean Marsupial Tree Frog Gastrotheca riobambae

The Andean Marsupial Tree Frog is endemic to high altitude Andean habitat in an area of Ecuador. The frogs, formerly common, are now severely endangered by habitat loss.

The male frog transfers eggs from the female to her dorsal pouch, where she keeps them (5-6 weeks) until they can be released to water as tadpoles.
