Andean Marsupial Tree Frog Gastrotheca riobambae

The Andean Marsupial Tree Frog is endemic to high altitude (to 2200-3000 metres) Andean forest slopes in an area of Ecuador. Formerly common, they are now severely endangered by habitat loss.

The male tree frog transfers eggs from the (usually larger) female to her dorsal pouch, where she keeps them (5-6 weeks) until they can be released to water as tadpoles.
