The Loggerhead is one of the seven species of deep sea turtle (marine turtle). They are prevalent throughout the temperate oceans of the world.
They are fully aquatic other than the females coming ashore to lay eggs. Females migrate thousands of kilometers to come ashore
on the same beach where they were born.
They reach maturity at 15 years old and live for some 35-40 years.
They typically reach some 3 feet (90cm) length but can be nearly double that.
Their diet is mainly jellyfish with crustaceans and invertebrates (and, unfortunately, discarded plastic bags
and released balloons which can be fatal).
The Loggerhead Turtle is highly endangered through urbanisation of beach habitat, tourism, hunting, predation and being caught in trawling nets.
