Fly River Turtle Carettochelys insculpta

The Fly River Turtle, also called the Pig-nosed Turtle, is an unusual freshwater turtle that has flippers rather than the webbed feet and claws of terrapins. It is more like the marine turtles than the freshwater terrapins. It is almost fully aquatic and has a double tubular nose.

It is native to rivers, streams and lakes of southern New Guinea and Australia's Northern Territory. Eggs are laid in sandy banks.

It is the only living species in its genus and family. Although their snout resembles that of the softshell turtles, their shell (carapace and plastron) is hard.

They can reach 20kg weight and 70cm (30in) length. The species is endangered, with thousands smuggled to Asian food, medicine and captive markets.
