The Chinese Softshell Turtle, also called the Asian Softshell (although the Asiatic Softshell is a different species/genus),
is native to eastern China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Far East Russia.
The shell is leathery rather than horn and can reach a foot in length. Mainly aquatic, it's habitat is fresh and brakish
slow-moving water and swamps.
It has been introduced to much of Southeast Asia, mainly as a food source (the most-used turtle for soup).
(Related species include a Lesser Chinese Softshell and a Northern Chinese Softshell).
