The Marginated Tortoise is native to Greece, Italy and the Balkan states. It is an oblong-shaped tortoise with a slight
"waist" in the middle of the shell.
It is the largest of the European tortoises and the most prevalent tortoise in Greece. The "Greek Tortoise" is a different
species (also called the Spur-thighed), hardly found in Greece.
They can live for well over 100 years.
Young tortoises are more strongly marked than older individuals.
