The Burmese Mountain Tortoise is also called the Asian Brown or Asian Forest Tortoise. It is a primitive and endangered tortoise native to forests of Southeast Asia (mainly Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Sumatra).

It is the 4th largest tortoise in the world and the second largest mainland tortoise (after the African Spur-thighed). There are two subspecies, the one shown being the northern M. e. phayrei. This subspecies is the largest in Asia; it can reach 2 feet (over 60cm) in length. (A few individual African Leopard Tortoises can grow larger but the typical size is smaller than the Burmese.)

Tubercles that grow from its back legs have led to the alternative name of Six-legged Tortoise. It is the only tortoise that lays its eggs above ground, sitting on them like a hen (for protection rather than incubation).
