Spiny Hill Terrapin/Turtle Heosemys spinosa

The Spiny Hill Turtle is a terrapin native to rainforest hills of Southeast Asia (the Malay Peninsula, Myanmar, Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines).

The spikes on the edge of the shell that give the terrapin its name are more pronounced on the young and break, blunt or recede with age.

They live in shallow, clear mountain streams but also on land in humid, shaded areas and hide under plant debris. Populations are isolated and the terrapin is slow to mature. They are particularly endangered by the Indonesian food market.
