The Painted Wood Turtle, also called the Ornate Wood Turtle, is a terrapin native to woods/forests
of southern Mexico and Central America.
Shells of the young are beautifully marked with high contrast red, yellow and black circular/semi-circular patterns
which fade to black on brown as they mature.
Mainly terrestrial, they frequent damp forests or live near waterways.
They stay buried in mud or leaf litter for long periods.
