The Common Musk Turtle, also called Stinkpot Turtle, is a "mud turtle" native to
the eastern USA and southeastern Canada. It can produce an unpleasant, musky smell to deter predators.
Its a small turtle reaching a maximum of some 5 inches (14cm) carapace length (but usually less),
with a grey, brown or black highly-domed shell. It usually has yellow or white lines on the face and neck, together with
small spines on the throat. It is almost fully aquatic, basking occasionally out of the water and laying eggs on the bank.
It likes shallow, slow-moving water.
The first two immediately above with spines on their neck look like South American Spiny-necked Swamp Terrapins,
(Acanthochelys species) with a paler shell. But the highly-domed, grey shell indicates that are probably Stinkpot Musk Turtles
without the head markings.
