The European Pond Terrapin or Turtle, is a freshwater chelonian from central and southern Europe and North Africa.
Usually called Terrapin in Europe and Turtle in North America.
As terrapins, they are semi-terrestrial/semi-aquatic, with a dual-purpose clawed feet/flippers.
They can live more than 50 years.
Their survival is threatened by increasing loss of wetland habitat and competition from the imported, feral Red-eared Slider Terrapin from the USA.
Their carapace is brown-black or grey-black and their head and neck is mottled with greenish yellow spots.
