Chicken Turtle Deirochelys reticularia

The Chicken Turtle is a terrapin native to southeastern U.S.A. It is the only species in its genus but there are three subspecies: the nominate Eastern Chicken Turtle is shown here. The name chicken is said to be because its flesh tastes like chicken. Larger females can reach some 25cm long (shell length). They have particularly long necks (when outstretched) for terrapins.
