The Black-breasted Leaf Turtle is native to China and Indochina. Its plastron (lower shell) has
a "black breast" and its keeled carapace (upper shell) is said to be leaf-shaped. It is also called the Vietnamese (Leaf)
Turtle (as is the larger Annam Leaf Turtle) and the Black-breasted Hill Turtle.
One of the smallest turtles in the world (shell length some 10 cm), it has unusual white irises
and eyes that research has shown able to watch two subjects at the same time (independent accomodation). The hook on its
beak is used to assist in climbing. Like most Asian turtles, it is in danger of extinction by over-collection for
food, medicine and the pet trade.
