The Painted Batagur or Painted Terrapin is native to rainforest of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
It has attractive dark markings on its light carapace (shell), a red blaze on its face and two snorkle-like nostrils for
breathing surface air. The shell can reach 2 ft (60cm) long.
It is critcally endangered, mainly by the local food markets (for its meat and its eggs) but also by
loss of habitat for palm oil plantations and fish farming and by the pet trade.
