The Annam Leaf Turtle, a terrapin also called the Vietnamese Leaf/Pond Turtle, is endemic to a small area
of central Vietnam but is nearly extinct in the wild.
Formerly common in its area, is was thought to be extinct in the wild by the 1940s or 50s but
in 2006 a small wild population had been discovered.
It is almost extinct in the wild again, with some 50 wild individuals estimated.
It has been driven to extinction by its popularity in turtle soup.
Other Asian turtles are now used for soup and declining, but the rare Annam Leaf Turtle is also still
collected for the food market.
