There are 4 subspecies of Schneider's Skink prevalent over North Africa, Turkey, the Middle East and Central Asia.
The nominal subspecies, commonly called the Berber Skink (a name also applied to the species as a whole) is found across North Africa.
The colouring is basically a shiny grey or grey-brown back and a white underside always separated by a yellow
or orange lateral line from mouth to tail. Sometimes the back is plain grey, sometimes with a few yellow or orange spots and
sometimes with a large number of bright spots, as shown above left.
The amount of yellow or orange on legs also varies.
They can reach a length of some 15 inches (38 cm).
They can climb vertical surfaces. They live in dry scrub habitat.
