The Mangrove Monitor (also Mangrove Goanna in Australia) is a large lizard native to northern Australia, New Guinea,
the Moluccas and the Solomon Islands northeast of Australia. It has yellow or greeny-yellow spots over its upper body for camouflage in
vegetated water and banks and can grow to over a metre (4 feet) long. There are similar-looking monitor lizards on other south Pacific
islands which have been classified as distinct separate species. It is one of only two known species of monitor to have a salt-excreting
gland for hunting prey in brakish and fully marine environments. It also has a laterally-compressed tail for swimming.
