The Crocodile Monitor, also called Salvadori's Monitor, is one of the world's largest lizards,
reaching 8 feet (2.5 metres) in length. It is said that, because of the long thin tail, individual specimens have
exceeded the length of the larger, heavier Komodo Dragon at 10 feet (3 metres).
It is endemic to Papua New Guinea. Despite its enormous size and weight, it is mainly arboreal.
The name Crocodile is due to its appearance. Its diet is birds, eggs and small mammals.
It is also said that it warns tribespeople of the presence of crocodiles.
It is threatened by deforestation and hunting/poaching.
