The Clouded Monitor is a large lizard native to Southeast Asia, namely Thailand, Myanmar, Indochina, Malaysia,
Singapore and Indonesia's Java and Sumatra.
Large males can reach up to 1.5 metres in length. They climb trees well and are mainly carnivorous.

In parts of their range they co-exist with the slightly larger Southeast Asian/Malayan Water Monitor,
V. salvator macromaculatus. For example both large monitors are active during the day in Singapore's Botanic Gardens
and in several of the parks and nature reserves in Singapore, where these photos of both were taken. The Clouded Monitor can be
differentiated by its slit nostrils halfway up its snout and the Water Monitor by rounded nostrils higher on the head nearer the end of the snout.
