Slow Worm Anguis fragilis

The Slow Worm, also spelled Slowworm and Slow-worm, is not a snake but is a lizard without legs. It is native to the UK and much of Europe and some of the Caucasus and Middle East. The male, can be bronze or silvery but the female and young are brown/bronze, often with black lines on flank or back. Slowworms give birth to live young (rather than laying eggs).

They are sleeker than lizards as their scales don't overlap, but they have lizard anatomy such as eyelids and the ability to shed and re-grow their tail. Although useful in gardens where they eat slugs and pests, they are at risk from slug pellets and cats.
