Common Lizard Zootoca vivipara (formerly Lacerta vivipara)

The Common Lizard, also called the European Lizard and the Viviparous Lizard, is present through much of Eurasia. It is the most common lizard in the UK.

The Common Lizard is basically brown or olive-brown with longitudinal stripes more or less visible. The underside of the male is orange and spotted while that of the female is paler and plainer.

The name "viviparous" means giving birth to live young (rather than laying eggs) which it does through all but the southern-most parts of its range.

Common Lizards hibernate in the coldest months.
