NZ Geckos Unlike most Geckos, the several species endemic to New Zealand give birth to live young rather than lay eggs.

Forest Gecko
The Forest Gecko, Hoplodactylus granulatus, is endemic to New Zealand. It is nocturnal and is mainly arboreal when foraging/hunting. The name "granulatus" applies to the beady skin. They are generally grey and brown but can be green with orange and white; inside the mouth is yellow or orange, the pink tongue colour changing with acidity (pH). The underside of the feet is also yellow. It is said to change its colour intensity to give best camouflage. They reach some 20cm in length. The population is declining and thought to be at risk.
Wellington Green Gecko
Wellington Green Gecko
The Wellington Green Gecko, Naultinus punctatus, also endemic to New Zealand and prevalent in the south of the North Island, was split out from the smaller Common Green Gecko in recent years. It differs in having yellow undersides to its feet. It lives in scrub habitat. Although nocturnal, it likes to sunbathe in the day and is vocal and aggressive if disturbed, displaying the bright blue inside of its mouth. It is also called the Barking Gecko. It grows to a head/body length of some 8-9cm with a tail nearly twice as long. Like the Forest Gecko, the population is also decling and classed at risk.
