The Crested Gecko is arboreal, nocturnal and native to New Caledonia.
Discovered in the 1800s, it was thought extinct until it was rediscovered in 1994. It remains vulnerable in the wild but
has become prevalent in the pet trade. A large gecko, it can reach 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) in length.
Like snakes and many geckos, it has no eyelids. It can wipe its eyes with its tongue. In compensation, it has fringed "eyelashes".
It can lose its tail if threated but the tail will not grow back again.
